What is it?Obsidian Dynamics Gridlock is a collection of cross-platform middleware, application software and utilities for facilitating High Availability (HA) and High Performance Computing (HPC) over a distributed computing grid or cluster. By combining inexpensive commodity computing hardware into a single virtual platform, Gridlock achieves high levels of reliability and performance equivalent to carrier grade hardware at a fraction of the cost. With Gridlock, the network is the computer.
What is it for?Gridlock maximises overall business performance by increasing the performance of existing services, both customer-facing and those internal to the organisation. More importantly, however, Gridlock protects your core business, ensuring your services remain fully operational during events ranging from a single component failure to a natural disaster.

Grid or Cluster? While a computing grid and a computing cluster represent slightly different concepts, their fundamental principals are the same: to direct a system of internetworked computers towards achieving a common goal. The difference is in the semantics: a typical grid presumes a set of geographically distant, loosely coupled, heterogeneous computers, while a cluster is typically local, tightly coupled and homogeneous. But what does "typical" mean, when every business is like no other. Indeed, a cluster-like topology can often take on grid-like behaviour, and vice versa. For that reason, Gridlock encompasses both gridware and clusterware in one unified platform.
